Developing your mentee’s professional skills and understanding

In earlier parts of this training package you learned that the mentor’s role is multi-faceted and demands a wide range of interpersonal and professional skills. You developed your understanding of how your role needs to change to match the needs of your mentee at different stages of her or his development as a teacher and of the need to provide a tailored balance of challenge and support at each stage. Whilst attending their teacher training programme, your mentee is being introduced to models of good practice and theoretical perspectives that underpin their professional role. One of your central tasks as a mentor is to enable your mentee to make concrete links between theory learnt during teacher training sessions and their own teaching practice, so that they develop confidence, competence and, above all, the ability to respond to learners’ needs. Whilst teacher training tutors will focus on the more generic aspects of professional skills and knowledge, you have the specific task of helping your mentee to teach a particular subject or work in a specific context. |
